Your Business Needs an Email Strategy

Over the last ten years, marketers have all but abandoned traditional marketing techniques for the call of the social media siren. Getting noticed and competing on social media channels now takes savvy know-how, stand-out design, and massive spending. It also takes time.

Many business owners or marketers already juggle the priorities of your “day job” with the growing demand for content online. As others drift towards the crowd, it might be time for you to get back to more reliable (and less crowded) methods to reach your target audience.

Tried and true, when done right, email marketing produces excellent results. In fact, email marketing is frequently cited as the most lucrative form of online marketing boasting a return on investment (ROI) of $36 for every $1 spent*.

Sounds good, right?

Here are a few tips to help you start (or restart) your email marketing journey:

  1. Build a List. Odds are, you have a client list that you could be tapping into for more than just daily email communications. Request permission to add clients, family, friends to your list. Set up a sign-up form on your website and social media channels. Be sure to include opt-in messaging, so people know what they’re signing up for.

  2. Develop Your Message. Think back to recent conversations you’ve had with clients. Are they asking for the same information? Have they expressed interest in learning more about a topic in which you’re an expert? Will you be primarily selling or conversing? Are these one-off emails or part of a larger campaign?

  3. Be Consistent. Determine how often you’ll send emails? Are there certain times in the year where you need to send essential client communications? How much time do you have to spend putting together emails? Create a calendar to help you strategize and plan.

  4. Write Content, Enhance with Design. You may be really good at whatever you do, but creating click-worthy design and content is a skill. To get the best results, you may need to bring in professional marketing help. Working together, they can help you make each email worth opening.

  5. Send, Analyze, Adjust, Send. Have fun, and be creative. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Check analytics, see what is working, and adjust for future sends. Follow up! Don’t just send the email, be sure to follow up with clients or prospects for best results.
